My performance practice involves a deconstruction of my medical condition using specific materials related to Hydrocephalus, a chronic medical condition I have had since birth. Known as ‘water on the brain’ my choice of materials such as plastic tubes and water, and appropriation of hospital paraphernalia is an attempt to claim control of a sick body. In a series of experiments, I invite audiences to examine my own pathology. Moreover, I look at the stakes of having an unseen disability: I am interested by its ambiguity and what this reveals of desire and cynicism. Using performance modes of one to one and small audiences to inform my practice, it is driven by feelings of love, dependency and an interrogation of empathy for a sick body; that have come from my own relationships and listening to too much Joni Mitchell - because intimacy, desire and joy are symptoms of a different kind of sickness too.
